Claire looked like she kind of got it, but not really. “What about you?”
Edison paused, a rare moment of quiet, before he smiled. “When I was younger, I did think about marrying her. After that, I just never met the right person.”
Claire couldn’t help rolling her eyes inside. That whole “never met the right person” thing? Total playboy talk. Guys like that loved to use it as an excuse to string girls along.
She leaned in, curiosity getting the better of her. “So, if you do meet the right person, would you get married?”
Edison thought she only acted like a kid when she got nosy like this. Still, he decided to humor her. “If I meet someone I really like, someone I want to keep by my side, I guess I’d want to get married.” He almost laughed to himself. Otherwise, what if she ran off with someone else, the way Tania did?
His answer was kind of surprising, but also kind of not. Claire just found it funny that even a guy as impressive as Edison was worried about his future wife running off.
She let the conversation drop after that, yawned, and soon drifted off to sleep.
When they finally got home, Edison noticed how deeply she was sleeping and didn’t have the heart to wake her. Claire only stirred when she felt the car stop. She woke up, sort of, but her brain was still lagging behind. Hugging her stuff, she wandered into her room half-asleep, peeled off her bloody clothes, took a quick shower, and fell into bed.
She was late for school the next day. She’d gone to bed way too late, and Edison hadn’t wanted to wake her. Pandora was even more protective. When she found out her granddaughter had been in a car accident—thankfully unharmed—and had stayed out late helping someone, she just called the school and got Claire excused for the day.
The car crash had been all over the news, so the teachers already knew what happened. Some of them were worried. “Claire’s grandmother, is Claire alright?” one asked. “It’s totally fine if she needs to rest for a day.”
