The Billionaire's True Heiress From Fake Jewel to Real Crown novel Chapter 160

Word travels fast. Claire hadn’t even made it out of the school gates before everyone seemed to know she and the Byron family’s heir had called off their engagement. The gossip spread so quickly, even Shirley ended up calling her.

“Claire, are you really breaking up with York?” Shirley asked. She used to hate Claire, but now she sounded almost sympathetic. First Claire was kicked out of her family, and now her engagement was over. It was like she had lost everything.

Claire was surprised Shirley cared so much. “Isn’t it a good thing to end the engagement?” she replied.

“But don’t you like York?” Shirley sounded genuinely confused. She had always assumed Claire was in love with him.

Claire laughed. “What makes you think I like York?”

Shirley wanted to say, Both my eyes saw it! But now she wasn’t so sure. Come to think of it, Claire had never actually said she liked York. And York had never claimed to like Claire, either. Shirley had just assumed they were a perfect match.

“You really don’t like York? He’s good-looking and comes from an amazing family,” Shirley pressed. “If you break up with him, it’ll be almost impossible to find someone better. Don’t forget, you’re not the James family heiress anymore.”

Without that title, Shirley figured Claire’s options would only get worse.

“You might as well refuse to call it off,” Shirley said. “If you stay engaged, at least you can marry into the Byron family and never have to worry about money or status.”

Suddenly, Shirley realized she’d rather see Claire end up with York than let someone like Cindy, who grew up in the countryside, take him. Claire had always been the best at everything. Losing to her was one thing. But if Cindy won out over both of them, Shirley would lose her mind.

“I can accept losing to you, but not to Cindy!” Shirley muttered through clenched teeth.

Claire, for once, tried to reassure her. “You’re not losing to me, and you’re not losing to Cindy, either.”
