Did she really think nobody cared about saving face? Talk about heartless.
Everyone used to see Claire as this glamorous, untouchable heiress, but now she just seemed like a total goofball. Still, she actually made a lot of sense. Vera couldn’t argue back.
“So it really wasn’t you?” Vera asked, giving it one last try.
Claire shrugged. “Why would I bother lying? I’m not that bored, trust me.”
That was it. Vera gave up, and the crowd that had gathered for some big drama realized it was all over before it even started. People began to drift away.
Dane glanced down at Claire, who was still clinging to his arm. “You know, you guys sure know how to make a big deal out of nothing.”
All this fuss over boys and comparing who’s better? He’d always thought only troublemakers acted like that.
Claire grinned and winked at him. “Come on, don’t blow my cover.”
Dane just shook his head. He wasn’t going to argue. “Grandpa had someone make you a late-night snack.”
Claire’s stomach growled at the thought. “Perfect. Let’s go eat.”
Honestly, nothing mattered more than food right now.
That’s when Lance stormed over, looking seriously annoyed.
“Claire!” he called out.
Immediately, Claire’s smile disappeared. “What now?” she said, completely unamused.
Even York looked surprised at her tone. Back when she was still with the James family, her fights with Lance were just family business. But now, she still didn’t hold back at all. Wasn’t she worried Lance might just use his connections to get her kicked out of Silverpeak International College?
But then she spotted Claire too. The excitement in her voice faded. “Oh, Claire, you’re here too.”
Claire smiled sweetly. “And so is your soon-to-be fiancé.”
Cindy’s eyes sparkled as she turned to York. “York, you’re here? Did you and Lance come pick me up?”
York nodded politely. “Yeah.”
Cindy looked apologetic. “Sorry for making you wait. I got stuck on a homework problem… I guess I’m just not that smart.”
Playing the damsel-in-distress worked on a lot of guys—and York was definitely one of them. He gave her a gentle smile. “Don’t worry about it. You just transferred here, it takes time to adjust.”
Cindy hadn’t expected York to be so kind, and instantly perked up. She was about to say something else when she caught sight of someone else nearby.
