His old friend could only sigh. “After all these years, you’re still hung up on this? Maybe Melissa and Agassi didn’t even end up together.”
Sammie just snorted. Yeah right. Of course they ended up together. Their kid was about to go to college. Claire’s last name was James, Melissa’s boyfriend’s last name was James. What more proof did anyone need?
Still, Sammie wasn’t about to share everything just yet. He brushed it off, “Sure, maybe you’re right. Anyway, I need to get going.”
He hung up, leaving his friend utterly confused.
Now, Sammie turned to look at Claire, his eyes filled with warmth and pride. There she was, the granddaughter of his favorite student.
Claire felt uneasy under his gaze. “You know, there are a lot of people in the world who look alike. Maybe you’re just seeing what you want to see. We’re both good-looking, and we’re both kind of talented at math. That’s probably it.”
Sammie smiled and shook his head. “I’m not that old, you know. You don’t just look like Melissa. Don’t you think you kind of look like Norris, too?”
Claire’s heart skipped a beat. She glanced at Norris—handsome, scholarly, definitely the academic type. She’d never really paid attention to it before, but Norris’s last name was also Churchill. Was he related to Melissa?
Sammie watched her face and admired her composure. Then he said gently, “Melissa is Norris’s aunt.”
Claire lifted an eyebrow. So that’s how it is.
