“How could you be so heartless?”
“Molly is your classmate. How could you call the police on her? And even hire a lawyer to sue her!”
Molly’s mom jabbed her finger close to Claire’s face, her voice shaking with anger.
Claire didn’t flinch. She just looked right back and said, “Well, she spread rumors online saying I cheated. That’s pretty heartless too.”
“Why don’t you try raising your own daughter better?”
“I was the one who got hurt. That’s why I turned to the law to protect myself.”
“If you think the law is unfair, you can always appeal.”
That calm, businesslike tone made Molly’s mom even angrier.
“You girls are classmates. She just told a tiny lie. It’s just a silly fight between kids. Did you really need to call the police and take her to court?”
“Molly already knows she was wrong. She’s willing to apologize. Why are you being so harsh? How can a girl your age have such a cold heart?”
“Enough. Stop it.” Molly’s dad stepped in, pulling his wife back.
He was a businessman, more clear-headed than his wife. Even though Claire was just a teenager, she stood there calm and collected, acting like none of this bothered her. Clearly, she wasn’t someone you could just push around.
She might not be the James family heiress anymore, but you could still see the way she carried herself. Girls raised in families like that might look innocent, but they had a sharp edge underneath.
Definitely not someone regular people could handle easily.
Molly’s mom yanked her arm free. “I’m not done talking!”
She plopped right down on the sidewalk and started shouting, making a huge scene.
“Everyone, look over here. Look at this girl. My daughter is her classmate. They had a tiny disagreement, and she wants my daughter thrown in jail!”
“She’s our only child. She’s still so young. She already knows she was wrong, and she’s willing to apologize…”
