The driver didn’t press for an answer. He wasn’t the type to stick his nose into other people’s business. In a way, Claire and Edison were pretty alike. Neither of them liked anyone meddling in their affairs.
“Claire, do you want to go straight to the restaurant or head home to change first?” he asked.
Usually, when a girl had a date or an important dinner, getting ready was non-negotiable. Claire glanced at her phone. There was still plenty of time. “Let’s go home and change,” she said.
Once she got home, the place was empty. She slipped into something nicer, got herself together, and, thinking of Jenny’s perfectionist streak, decided to put on a little makeup. Nothing too much, just enough to look fresh.
Edison came by to pick her up. They’d planned to meet Jenny at the restaurant, and someone else was tasked with keeping Jenny company until then. As hosts, Claire and Edison were the first to arrive.
Jenny showed up just five minutes later, practically bouncing with excitement when she spotted Claire.
“Oh my God, you’re gorgeous! Seriously, you’re the most beautiful Solenian girl I’ve ever seen!” Jenny gushed, her accent thick as she pulled Claire into a big, enthusiastic hug.
“Thanks. You look amazing too,” Claire managed, quickly stepping back. All the hugging and European-style greetings were still a bit much for her.
Jenny gave her a slightly wounded look, as if she’d just been betrayed. Claire just stared back, cool and unbothered.
Jenny mouthed, “Don’t you feel guilty?” and Claire just smiled. Sorry, no guilt here.
With nothing left to say, Jenny turned her attention to Edison. If this guy wasn’t Claire’s uncle, and not someone she’d be working with soon, she might have actually whistled at him. With his suit jacket off, it was impossible to miss the shape of his muscles under his shirt. That trim waistline was practically begging for attention.
