“What do you mean?”
“Is there someone else, besides Molly’s family, who’s out there trashing you online on purpose?” Sophia was sharp. It didn’t take her long to guess. “Wait, is it Cindy?”
Claire didn’t reply, but Sophia was already convinced.
“I knew it was her. She’s never been able to leave things alone. First, she went online saying you stole her life, that you took her place. Now she’s trying to turn your teammates and future classmates against you? I can’t even tell if it’s Molly who corrupted Cindy, or if Cindy was always like this.”
Claire just laughed it off. “It’s fine. Honestly, they’re living proof of that old saying. Birds of a feather, right?”
She kept chatting with Sophia, her fingers tapping away on her keyboard.
Sophia kept ranting, then suddenly let out a little gasp. “Claire, someone online just exposed the person behind all the drama! It’s Octavia. She actually paid for trolls to go after you. Seriously, how could she do this? Even if you’re not her biological daughter, she still raised you. What does she even get out of paying people to ruin your name? She’s gone way too far. But right now, everyone’s just tearing her apart in the comments. Hang on, let me read you some.”
Sophia scrolled through the posts, reading them out, her voice full of outrage.
“Wow, Claire’s adoptive mom is really something else. Just to protect her real daughter, she’d throw her adopted one under the bus?”
“Who pays trolls to smear their own kid? How scared is she that her adopted daughter might outshine her real one?”
“I heard her real daughter isn’t even that impressive. Not as smart, not as pretty. She calls the adopted one ruthless, but how great could her own kid be?”
Claire wanted Sophia to relax.
Sophia let out a sigh of relief. “That’s what I love about you. You don’t let anyone push you around.”
Claire laughed. “You just like it when people fight back and don’t hold back, right?”
“Hehe...” Sophia giggled.
Meanwhile, Octavia wasn’t having a good day at all. Her son and her husband had both called her, one after the other, both basically telling her off for stirring up trouble. Her husband was a bit more measured, but only because the company’s stock price had taken a hit.
