This time of year, it got dark so early. By the time Claire finished dinner, the sky was already almost black. She just wanted to go home and crash. It wasn’t like Dane could stop her.

“Do you want me to pick up some local treats for you to take back?” Claire didn’t argue. Honestly, this whole situation was partly her fault. The idea popped into her head out of nowhere. You couldn’t just let someone leave empty-handed, right?

“No need,” Dane cut her off, as if he could read her mind, his tone telling her not to overthink things. Who went shopping for souvenirs in the middle of the night anyway?

With nothing else to do, Claire just drove Dane to the airport herself. And if anyone thought Dane was a wild driver, they had never been in a car with Claire. Dane spent the whole ride sitting stiffly, his brows knit tight.

“Do you always drive like this?”

Her driving was fast, almost reckless, way too thrilling for his taste.

“You’ve seen me behind the wheel before,” Claire said with a shrug, completely unbothered.

“That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful,” Dane said, not hiding his worry.

Claire lifted her hands off the wheel for half a second. “Relax. I had to get good at this. Trust me, most drivers aren’t as steady as I am.” She flashed him a grin. “Besides, last time we were being chased, you saw I could handle it.”

That made her remember. “Speaking of which, any updates? Is the danger over?”

Dane shook his head. “No.” He really didn’t want to talk about it.

“So, you’re still in danger?” Claire’s worry showed in her furrowed brows.

Dane reached over and squeezed her shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. Everything’s stable for now.”

Van and his team had practically wiped out the threat last time. It was a close call, Van nearly didn’t make it home. The Hawk family wouldn’t let things go easily, though. Those people would be hunted down sooner or later.

“Alright,” Claire said quietly, not wanting to push him.

She brought Dane all the way to the airport and stayed with him for a while longer, only leaving to finally head home herself when his flight time was close.

The next morning, Claire dragged herself out of bed and got ready for the day. She planned to visit the hospital.
