Luckily, they’d run through this scene so many times. Oakley gave the director an OK sign from his window. The director wasted no time and waved at the special effects crew to get ready. The thieves’ car took off with Elena inside, speeding ahead. Oakley floored the SUV, determined to catch up, just as the explosion ripped through the air.
A tower of fire blasted up behind them. The shock of a real explosion hit Oakley like a punch to the gut. For a second, all he could hear was this roaring in his ears. The SUV shook so hard that he didn’t even know what was going on, just that his head slammed into the windshield. It hurt, but more from surprise than anything else. He ended up with a cut on his forehead and blood trickling down. He couldn’t hear a thing outside, not the yelling, not the panic, nothing. But his body went on autopilot, trying to finish what they’d started. If the director hadn’t called cut, Oakley wasn’t about to stop.
That’s when he realized this wasn’t a choice. The brakes were gone. The car wouldn’t stop.
“Something’s wrong! Stop Oakley! Stop the car!” The director was shouting into his megaphone, voice frantic, but Oakley couldn’t hear him and the SUV just kept on barreling forward.
Claire’s face tightened as she saw what was happening. There was no mistaking it. This wasn’t a stunt anymore. Karla’s panic went straight to her eyes. If Oakley got hurt now, there’d be no way to film the rest of the movie. All she could do was try to get someone to stop him.
“Oakley’s car is out of control!” Someone’s voice cut through the chaos.
Claire moved to Karla, grabbing her hand to calm her down.
“What?” Karla looked completely stunned, pale and horrified.
Disaster just kept piling on, one thing after another.
“We have to call the police,” Karla said, her voice steady despite everything. The fake explosion had turned real, Oakley was definitely hurt, and this was too much for a freak accident. If they didn’t get help, was she just supposed to wait around and watch something even worse happen?
The director heard and agreed. They needed to call the authorities, but right now there was a runaway car barreling toward the river at the end of the lot. The thought of that brought a chill to the air. If they didn’t stop it, Oakley’s life was at risk.
