“If Claire’s confident she can do it, I’ll do everything I can to persuade my family,” Nolan said. He truly cared about Julia. She’d battled illness since she was a child and life had never been easy for her. To make things worse, she couldn’t even be with the boy she loved.
Sometimes Nolan seriously thought about just pushing Elvis and Julia together. But, deep down, he knew acting on impulse would only trigger problems between their families. Sure, the Ford family was wealthy and influential, but Elvis’s family wasn’t the type you could mess with either. Maybe they didn’t approve of Julia. It wasn’t about her background. It was her health. She could die young at any moment.
Why would anyone want a frail daughter-in-law who might not even be able to have kids? He guessed Elvis’s family would never accept that.
“I can’t promise anything,” Claire replied, refusing to make Nolan any empty promises. “But Solenia has a lot of really great traditional medicine. If you want to try something new and go for a more holistic treatment, you could come to Solenia and give it a shot.”
She didn’t give a definite answer, but to Nolan, it was hope.
“Thank you, Claire,” Nolan said gratefully. He knew he’d probably rushed things today and he really didn’t want to push Claire too far. He’d brought gifts to thank her for looking after Julia. Claire tried to turn them down, but in the end, the gifts followed her onto the plane.
There was no helping it. If you didn’t accept a thank-you gift from the Ford family, people might start thinking you had ulterior motives, or that you were looking for something bigger.
So. Fine. She accepted them. The haul covered everything—clothes, shoes, bags, skincare, makeup, jewelry. Apparently, Nolan had a good sense for what women liked because everything matched Claire’s style perfectly.
Once Nolan watched Claire and the others board their plane, he finally headed back to the hospital.
Julia had begged to be discharged so she could pick out the gifts for Claire herself, but he didn’t let her.
“Nolan! Did she accept our gift?” The moment Nolan returned to the hospital, Julia rushed over to ask.
“She did. Claire’s pretty smart,” Nolan said. “She refused once, but after the gifts were sent to the airport, she didn’t push them back.”
