“But Claire doesn’t have feelings for you. She’s not just going to do what you say.”
Given the chance at something better, Latham had no problem taking it. Business was always about getting the most out of a situation, and his new attitude was all about protecting his own interests.
Lance knew deep down his father was making sense. Still, his feelings for Claire had twisted into something he couldn’t let go of, maybe even something a little unhealthy. There was no way his parents could understand, but honestly, he didn’t care if they ever did.
“I’m not worried,” Lance said, his tone calm. “She’s still young. When she gets older, she’ll see how good I’ve been to her.”
Latham shook his head, frustrated. “And how do you know that? Once she grows up, her world’s going to get a whole lot bigger. She might not even remember you, let alone care. At best, you’ll always just be a brother to her, not a man she could ever love.”
He wanted Lance to see the truth for what it was. If Claire was the type to run after money or couldn’t handle a little hardship, she’d never have looked towards The James Family. She barely got along with Octavia or Cindy, so the chances of her becoming one of them again were next to none.
Latham had once hoped to keep everything in the family, but now it just didn’t seem possible. With a better path right in front of them, why bother clinging to the idea of Claire?
Claire deserved someone she actually liked. If things between her and The James Family could ever be fixed, then maybe everyone could benefit later, but there was just no reason to force it now.
Latham had accepted that much, but Lance hadn’t.
Lance sat quietly, his father’s words heavy in the air. But even so, giving up wasn’t on his mind.
Octavia saw the stubborn look on her son’s face and sighed. “Lance, you should at least give things a try with Mabel. You don’t even know if she’d want to be with you, so why are you hanging everything on Claire?”
“I’ve already explained myself to Mabel. If I turn around and say I want to give it a shot now, it’ll just feel forced. She’ll see right through it.”
