Garry was never afraid of a fight. He always knew exactly how to hit a nerve.
“Me? Jealous of some fake who stole someone else’s place?” Garry shot back, rolling his eyes.
The teacher was just now catching up, glancing between the two girls. The James family had actually put both the real and fake heiress in the same class? What on earth were they thinking?
“Is Cindy really transferring to our class?” the teacher asked, looking a little worried.
“Yes.” Lance’s gaze swept the room until he spotted Claire.
“Claire, come out here for a second.”
Claire looked at Lance like he’d grown a second head. Why did he want her to step outside? She just ignored him, keeping her head down.
Lance’s face tightened. He could tell Claire wasn’t about to play along with anything he said.
“Teacher, could you find a seat for my sister?” Lance made sure to put extra emphasis on “sister,” a little show just for Claire.
The teacher seemed nervous, probably worried Lance might lose his temper. “Of course.”
“Cindy, the only open seats are in the back. You can sit—”
Before the teacher finished, someone raised their hand.
“Teacher, I’d like to sit with Cindy.”
It was Molly.
She’d been sitting next to Garry, so by volunteering, she was basically booting him out.
“Thank you,” Cindy said, honestly surprised at how friendly Molly was.
Cindy gave her a gentle smile, then turned to Garry. “Hey, I’m kind of short, and I might not be able to see from the back. Do you mind switching with me?”
With Lance standing at the door, watching over her like a guard dog, Garry didn’t want to start anything. “Alright, fine.”
He started gathering his things, but not before shooting Molly a dirty look.
Molly looked stunned.
Cindy jumped in right away. “Claire, that’s not what Molly meant. Don’t be upset with her.”
“She’s just sticking up for me.”
“What do you even need defending from? Because I took your seat?” Claire frowned at Cindy, trying to figure out why Cindy kept forcing herself into her life.
At first, Claire had felt a little bad for Cindy, but the more time she spent around her, the more she realized Cindy had a talent for making things awkward. Whether it was on purpose or not, she always managed to stir up trouble.
After a few run-ins like this, Claire’s patience was running out.
“No, it’s not like that, Claire… Are you mad at me?”
Cindy’s eyes filled with tears in an instant. “I shouldn’t have come back to the James family. If I hadn’t, Claire wouldn’t have been sent to the countryside by Lance.”
The rest of the class watched, eating up the drama. But Lance had seen enough.
