The words just slipped out of Lance’s mouth. It was only after he finished speaking that he realized how he’d introduced himself.
The homeroom teacher wasn’t expecting a call from Claire’s brother. If her memory served, this was Lance, right? Hadn’t the whole James family switched the real and fake daughter situation already?
“Are you sure you’re calling about Claire and not Cindy?”
“I’m sure!” Lance replied, then quickly added, “No, teacher, you’ve got it wrong. I’m not calling for either of them in that way. I just heard Claire got into trouble at school again and wanted to check in.”
He hesitated, his voice softer. “Even if she’s not our blood relative, she did grow up in the James family. We sent her away, but honestly, we still care about her. It’s just… Cindy is my parents’ biological daughter, my real sister. Now that she’s home, we have to think about her feelings too…”
The teacher understood his meaning. So the James family sent Claire away to keep things balanced for their real daughter? If that was true, maybe they weren’t so heartless after all.
Darcey felt genuinely happy for Claire. Having someone worry about her was better than being left alone.
She couldn’t help thinking about Edison, the man who’d come to school earlier. He’d even managed to put the strict dean in his place. He was impressive, honestly. Maybe the family Claire ended up with wasn’t as bad as everyone assumed. It didn’t seem nearly as scary as the rumors made it sound. At the very least, you could tell this uncle really cared about Claire.
“I understand, Lance.”
“So… about her getting into a fight today?” Lance just wanted the whole story.
