The Day I Walked Away My Empire Began novel Chapter 300

Sometimes, it’s only after surviving something life-changing that you finally see what really matters.

Before, he’d just wanted to give things a shot with her—see where their story might go. But after coming face to face with death, he realized that nothing else meant a thing. Not fame, not money, not power. None of it could follow him to the grave. The only thing he wanted was to be with the woman he loved. That was the only way his heart felt at peace. That was what made life feel complete.

Mr. Pitts let out a dramatic sigh. “Well, well, looks like we’ve got a real romantic in the family now.”

Mrs. Pitts just shook her head and smiled. “As long as Elio’s happy, why should we stop him?”

She took a long look at Lucie—from her simple but elegant clothes, to the gentle grace in her eyes, and the kind of calm confidence you can’t fake. She was beautiful, yes, but more than that, she looked like someone who’d been raised right. This was exactly the kind of woman her grandson needed. Elio had always been a bit wild; someone steady and sensible was just what he needed to keep him grounded.

So what if Lucie had been married before? The Heath family had chosen her, after all. The fact that Steven had once picked her only proved how extraordinary she was.

Joanna looked like she was about to explode. Brenda, June’s mom, just kept getting more and more upset. The Pitts and Swanson families had always wanted Elio and June to end up together. She’d basically already considered Elio her future son-in-law.

Well, so much for that.

She glanced over at June, who sat there chewing gum like she didn’t have a care in the world. All her attention was on Steven these days. Elio? She’d already lost interest.

“Come on, quit messing around and take your medicine,” Lucie coaxed, her voice soft and gentle. She carefully took the pill, poured one out, and held it to Elio’s lips. It was tiny, like a jellybean, but knowing that one little pill cost as much as a luxury car was just ridiculous.

“Open your mouth,” she said.

“Alright,” Elio replied, obediently parting his lips. As he took the pill, his tongue accidentally brushed her fingertips.
