Avery’s POV
I had just barely recovered from that morning’s run-in with Gideon. The way he had played with Bjorn, so sure and steady, kept flickering through my mind like those few moments in the backyard were playing on a movie reel.
More than that, I kept thinking about the ease with which he caught the ball before it hit my face. The tender look in his eyes that made my wolf purr with contentment when she had been very much not content for a decade.
And everything that happened after that.
I didn’t know how to feel about any of it anymore. Not him, or his relationship to my son, or my own feelings.
That was becoming more and more common lately. And after a decade of being so sure I had made all the right decisions in my life, it was starting to piss me off.
I decided I needed some fresh air and to get away from the house for a bit, so I threw on my sneakers and grabbed my purse and began walking toward town. I rarely went out inside the pack, which I knew was bad. Sebastian had been kind enough to make this place my home, and I barely paid attention to it.
The town was bustling at this hour. The little market square was full of vendors selling all kinds of goods, everything from handmade hats and gloves to bottles of honey and jam and even one that was selling home brewed wine.
I taste tested some wine and decided it was worth purchasing, so I bought a bottle to surprise Sebastian with later at dinner. I was just browsing a booth selling handmade jewelry when I felt a strangely familiar presence beside me that had me looking up.
“Melissa,” I said, stepping back a little when I saw the sun-tanned shoulders and honey-colored hair piled up behind a paisley bandana. “Fancy seeing you here.”
The woman looked at me and smiled, then took the pair of dangly earrings I was holding and held them up beside my face. She scrunched her nose, then shook her head and picked up another pair.
“These ones are better for your face shape,” she said, holding them out to me. They were small and delicate. I took them, and upon closer inspection, I could see that they were tiny silver hummingbirds.
