Avery’s POV

I woke to the feeling of something warm and soft settling around my shoulders.

My neck ached. So did my back. I blinked my eyes open slowly, realizing that I had fallen asleep at my desk with my cheek pressed against an open book. A line of drool had pooled on the page beneath my mouth, smudging some of the text.

“Easy,” Sebastian’s voice said from somewhere above me. “You’ve been out for a while.”

I sat up, wincing as my spine protested the movement. The blanket he’d draped over me slipped down to my waist. I caught it before it could fall completely and pulled it back up around my shoulders.

“What time is it?” I muttreed.

“A little past eight.”

I rubbed my eyes. The room was bright now, morning light streaming in through the windows. My tea from last night had gone cold, and the fire in the distillation equipment had clearly long since burned out.

Sebastian was standing beside me with one hand resting on the back of my chair. He looked like he’d already been up for hours, showered and dressed in clean clothes.

“You should’ve gone to bed,” he said.

“I was working.”

“Clearly.” He glanced at the open book on the desk. “Although I’m not sure how much work you got done after you passed out.”

I looked down and blushed a little at the puddle of drool. Then promptly shut the book, which only resulted in more blushing, because I only realized after the fact that I probably should have cleaned it first.

Sebastian’s lips quirked into a small smile. “Don’t worry about it.”

I stood, folding the blanket and setting it on the chair. Sebastian stepped back to give me space, but not much. Just enough that I could move without bumping into him.

Clearing my throat, I quickly turned away, busying myself with straightening the books on the table. Sebastian didn’t move.
