Avery’s POV
I grabbed my jacket from the chair and followed Gideon down the stairs and out the back door. The night air was cool against my skin, and I took a deep breath, shutting my eyes for a moment as the smell seeped into my lungs.
“Smells good, doesn’t it?” Gideon’s voice was low, and when I opened my eyes, I looked over to see that he’d shut his as well. “This is my favorite time of year here. When the pine trees are redolent.”
He opened his eyes and met my gaze for a moment before he offered me his arm. I hesitated, then took it, letting him guide me along the familiar path toward the woods. It was still perfectly maintained, although some of the pavers had cracked over time and now had grass and little flowers growing up between the spaces.
Gideon uncorked the wine as we walked, taking a swig before handing it to me. I took it and drank. It was dry, just a little bitter, and slid down my throat like velvet.
We didn’t talk at first as we walked side by side down the stone path that led into the forest. The moon was bright enough that we didn’t need a flashlight, casting everything in silver and shadow.
The trees closed in around us as we went deeper. The sounds of the village faded, replaced by the rustle of leaves and the distant call of an owl. My feet remembered this path even though my mind didn’t want to.
Gideon stopped at a clearing I knew too well.
My breath caught.
It was the same spot. The same moss-covered ground, the same circle of old trees. The place where we had gotten married ten years ago, just the two of us and the moon overhead.
“I came here a lot over the past ten years,” Gideon said, releasing my arm. “We don’t have to stay if you don’t want to. It’s just a force of habit—”
“I want to stay.”
Gideon shot me a look of surprise. I ignored it and took the bottle away, walking over to a mound of moss in the center of the clearing where the moon was perfectly visible overhead like a great white smile in the sky.
