She smiled and walked around the counter. “That’s nice. Where does she live?”

“In the human city. She’s a human.”

The shopkeeper pulled her head back. “Oh, then we won’t have anything for her here.”

“What?” I asked. “Why not?”

The shopkeeper didn’t look unkind, in fact a little contrite, as she said, “Everything I make here is formulated for us. For werewolves. The concentration of the botanicals reacts poorly to human skin. The botanicals we use are a lot stronger than what humans are used to. It would irritate the skin at best and give them a severe reaction at worst.”

“Oh.” I picked up another bottle, turning it over in my fingers. “Would it be possible to make something suitable for humans? I’d be happy to pay for a custom scent.”

She made a face.

“Oh, um…” She sighed. “I carried a few, years back, for the rare humans who came to visit the packs. But I had to keep them in the back room with the door shut.” She shook her head. “The synthetic compounds they use make my wolf go crazy. It smells awful.”

I’d almost forgotten that—back when I first moved to the human lands, I recalled how overpowering and, frankly, sickening human perfumes were. Like ten sneezes building up in my sinuses all at once. One time, I hugged Claire and accidentally inhaled a little and had a coughing fit immediately after.

Over the years, I got used to the smell. I supposed I’d forgotten that humans and werewolves had that fundamental difference in tastes.

“Okay, well, thanks anyway,” I said. “Your shop is lovely, by the way.”

The woman smiled, and I pushed back out into the street. By the time my feet hit the cobblestones, an idea had sprung to mind.

I’d only ever made medicine before, but what if I expanded my horizons? What if I could make a perfume that was not only suitable for human and werewolf skin, but something…. Something that could allow humans to create their own scents that were pleasing to werewolves?
