Vivica was also in high spirits. “It’s nothing,” she said cheerfully. “As long as everyone had a good time.”
Holly stood up and clapped her hands to get everyone’s attention. “Vivica needs to go to the hospital to be with her son, so she’s leaving now.”
Everyone turned to look, offering thanks and warm farewells. It was obvious the evening had worked; everyone was noticeably warmer toward Vivica now.
After saying her goodbyes, Vivica grabbed her bag and turned to leave.
Zavier, who had been playing bridge with a few male colleagues, saw her leaving alone and, after a moment’s thought, hurried after her. “Vivica.”
She turned and offered a polite smile. “Zavier.”
“Let me walk you downstairs.”
The club occupied the top two floors of a fifty-story skyscraper, so it was indeed a bit of a trip down.
“That’s not necessary, Zavier. You should get back to the others,” Vivica declined, careful not to give anyone the wrong idea.
But Zavier kept pace with her and stepped ahead to press the elevator button.
“Have Mr. Smith and the others bothered you again since they left?” he asked, trying to make conversation.
“No, they haven’t,” Vivica said, shaking her head. Then she asked, “Did he contact you?”
“We have professional dealings, but we haven’t discussed anything personal.”
Vivica found it strange, too. What had made Raymond suddenly have a change of heart and stop contacting her?
The elevator arrived. Zavier insisted on seeing her downstairs, so he followed her inside.
Vivica was speechless. For some reason, she felt he was getting jealous again, though he was hiding it well.
Zavier hadn’t expected Joseph to be waiting quietly downstairs. He was visibly shocked to see him. After all, for a man of Joseph’s status and position, whose time was worth a fortune in the legal world, sitting here waiting for someone was a pure waste of money.
He was once again struck by the realization that Joseph's feelings for Vivica ran deeper than he could have imagined.
“You’re too kind, Mr. Baird. It was on my way. I have to come back to the office to work tomorrow, so I should be going now, too.” Zavier recovered from his surprise and quickly shook his hand.
The two men appeared amicable, but only they knew what was really on their minds.
Vivica glanced between them, afraid Joseph might suddenly say something that would put everyone in an awkward position. She instinctively stepped closer and looped her arm through his.
“Let’s go. Chaim is probably already asleep.”
