Perhaps they subconsciously favored sons, though not to the point of abandoning their own child.
Vivica said with a self-deprecating smile, “Honestly, even if I hadn’t been sent away and had stayed with that family, my life probably would have been about the same as it was with the Lynns.”
The only difference might have been a bit more financial comfort.
“Perhaps,” Joseph said. “Raymond’s aunt is married into the Chase family. It’s a big family, and from what I’ve heard, it’s vicious. They scheme against each other for profit, even hiring hitmen to kill their own kin. If you had really grown up in the Chase family, it’s hard to say if you would have even survived this long.”
Joseph delivered the words with unnerving calm, but Vivica’s eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at him. “What did you say? Hired a hitman… to kill someone?”
“Yes. Raymond’s aunt’s husband was left paralyzed from the neck down after a car crash, and their son was killed in the same accident.”
The implication hit Vivica immediately. “Are you saying that car accident wasn’t an accident at all?”
Joseph frowned. “I’m not certain, but Raymond called me today specifically about this…”
He then recounted the entire morning phone call with Raymond, relaying every detail to Vivica. Before he even finished, a violent shiver ran through her, a deep, penetrating chill.
Joseph took her hand, gently rubbing it to warm her up. “When Raymond heard about your car accident, his first thought was that it might be connected. It was only a suspicion, so he reached out to me to share his concerns.”
“To be honest, I had my own doubts about the crash,” Joseph continued. “But the police ruled it a traffic accident, and I had no concrete evidence. That’s why I didn’t mention my suspicions to you. But after what Raymond told me, I’m more certain than ever that there’s more to this than meets the eye.”
A cold dread washed over Vivica. The thought that in this modern, lawful society, complete strangers would hire a hitman to travel across the country and kill her—all based on a mere suspicion about her identity—was terrifying. And they had almost succeeded.
It sent another wave of shivers through her. “That’s horrifying… Those people are completely brazen. They’re family, how could they do something so ruthless?”
“People will do anything for money. That’s just human nature.” Joseph’s tone was heavy, his eyes reflecting a man who had seen it all. “The eldest and third brothers started as ordinary men. They used their parents’ favoritism and pressure to seize their brother’s assets, and they’ve been living in luxury ever since. In their minds, that fortune has been theirs for years. Now, a supposed niece suddenly appears, threatening to take a share of it—or worse, reclaim the entire family business that was never theirs to begin with. What do you think desperate men will do?”
Vivica still found it hard to believe. “But there’s no direct proof that I’m the missing twin sister. I haven’t even met them. They’d order a hit based on a simple suspicion?”
