On the other end of the line, Roderic immediately rallied the troops. “Hurry, the boss is in trouble! He should be in the club somewhere. Split up and find him!”
At his command, the firm's top lawyers, who had been immersed in games just moments before, mobilized instantly.
Meanwhile, Joseph, despite the imminent danger and his hazy consciousness, knew what he had to do. He slammed his head against the door, using the sharp jolt of pain to stay awake. While bracing the door with his body, he managed to hook the phone toward him with his foot. The priority was to call the police.
He was the victim. He had to seize the initiative and prevent his attackers from controlling the narrative.
He managed to dial 911, but he couldn't articulate his location. However, the desperation in his voice and the terrifying sound of the door being kicked were enough for the dispatcher to recognize the emergency and begin tracing his location.
In the end, Roderic was faster. He was already in the building.
The bathroom door was finally kicked open, the force of the blow sending it crashing into Joseph and rendering him unable to fight back.
Just as the two men, holding the knife with a towel, were about to press the weapon back into Joseph’s hand, the sound of a large group of people thundered down the hallway, their shouts echoing, “Mr. Baird! Mr. Baird!”
The two men froze, their faces masks of panic.
Leaning against the floor, Joseph, flushed and panting, taunted them, “My people are here. If you don’t run now… it’ll be too late.”
His words had barely faded when the two men, fearing for their lives, dropped the knife and bolted out the door. The injured woman, clutching her wound, tried to follow, but she lacked the strength. She had just reached the doorway when she saw the wave of people approaching and quickly retreated in terror.
If they hadn’t run, Roderic might have had trouble pinpointing the exact room. But their frantic escape drew immediate attention.
“There are people running over there!”
“After them! It has to be them!”
“Quick, find Mr. Baird!”
Roderic was the first to burst into the room. He stopped short, stunned by the sight of a woman, pale and terrified, clutching a bloody knife.
“No, don’t come any closer!” she stammered, hunched over and gripping the weapon.
Seeing her frail state, Roderic dismissed her as a threat. He strode forward and decisively snatched the knife from her hand.
“Ah!” she shrieked, stumbling backward.
The injured woman, trembling like a leaf, withered under the collective glare of dozens of piercing eyes.
Just as the chaos peaked, the police arrived. “What’s going on here? Who called the police?” the lead officer called out as the phalanx of lawyers parted to let them through.
Leaning heavily on Roderic, with another associate holding his arm to keep him upright, Joseph’s breathing was ragged, and his eyes were bloodshot. The drugs had taken complete control of his body, and he could barely speak clearly. “It… it was me… I called…”
Roderic, piecing together the events, had a good idea of what had happened. “Officer, my boss, Joseph Baird, is the one who called. He was drugged by this woman and her accomplices, who then tried to harm him. My colleagues are pursuing the two other men right now. Mr. Baird needs immediate medical attention!”
Before Roderic could finish, the woman on the floor cried out, “No… that’s not what happened! Officer, this man tried to rape me! When I fought back, he tried to kill me! Look, I’m injured…”
Her accusation was met with universal disbelief, not just from Roderic, but from everyone else in the crowded room. They had all worked with Joseph for years and knew his character. He hadn’t been involved in a scandal like this even when he was single; why would he do something so foolish now that he was a newlywed?
Everyone knew that being a lawyer meant making enemies. The immediate consensus was that this was a setup, a deliberate frame-up by one of Joseph’s adversaries.
Without a word from Joseph, his team of lawyers automatically went on the defensive.
“Miss, do you understand that making false accusations has serious legal consequences? Who paid you to dig your own grave with such a clumsy scheme?”
