Forcing her attention back to Quintina’s call, Vivica took a steadying breath before asking, “What news? Is it bad?”
“You don’t know?” Quintina exclaimed, shocked.
“It’s all over the internet. They’re saying it happened last night. That Mr. Baird became obsessed with some woman, tried to assault her, and then stabbed her when she refused him. They’re also saying he was high on drugs, completely out of his mind, and that it took a swarm of police officers to restrain him…”
Vivica’s mind went blank before Quintina could even finish. She instinctively turned to look at Joseph.
Suddenly, it all made sense—why he had seemed so off when she called him that morning. Something terrible had happened last night.
“Vivica, Mr. Baird would never do something like that,” Quintina insisted. “He must have crossed someone powerful in one of his cases. Someone set him up, right?”
Quintina trusted Joseph’s character implicitly. Even without hearing a word of explanation, she was unconditionally certain he was innocent.
Vivica’s head was still spinning. If this really happened to Joseph last night, then without a doubt, the Chase brothers in Sydville were behind it.
It was one thing for them to come after her, but now they were framing Joseph using such despicable and vicious tactics.
“Quintina, I’m just finding out about this now. Let me ask him what’s going on.”
She walked over to him, her brow furrowed as her eyes scanned him from head to toe. “What on earth happened last night? Quintina saw something online… rumors about you assaulting someone, battery, drug use…”
Of course, Vivica didn’t believe a word of that nonsense, but Joseph’s complexion was pale, and he looked almost ill. She had assumed it was just a bad hangover, but now she knew it was something far more serious.
Joseph had already been briefed on the situation and had ordered Roderic to handle it immediately. Seeing the anxiety on his wife’s face, he slowly reached out, took her hand in his, and asked in a low voice, “How do you know it’s just a rumor? I deliberately hid this from you. Aren’t you suspicious of me?”
“How could I possibly suspect you?” Vivica said with absolute certainty. “You’re a lawyer. You know better than anyone the trouble that comes with accusations like these. You would never destroy your own future.”
“Besides,” she continued, “you’re just not that kind of person. This afternoon in the garden, your cousin told me how girls chased you relentlessly since you were in school, writing love letters and giving you gifts, and you couldn’t be bothered. You’d rather let people think you and Harvey were a couple than get involved with any of them. I think even back then, you were smart enough to know that women often come with trouble.”
