Melanie’s few words perfectly dissected Vivica’s inner conflict. The fact that she was hesitating meant she was open to forgiving them. Otherwise, she would have made her decision without a second thought and never looked back.
"Mom, honestly, I'm not just thinking about myself. I'm thinking about Joseph, too." Vivica glanced back at the man standing beside her, offering a soft smile as she continued. "They want to bring me back into the fold so they can pass their company shares to me, rather than letting outsiders take over. But I couldn't care less about the money. Taking those shares will only paint a target on my back. Joseph was almost caught in their crossfire last time."
"If that's the only thing holding you back, don't sweat it. The Bairds aren't exactly pushovers," Melanie replied, echoing Joseph’s exact sentiment. "Joseph was caught off guard last time, but it won't happen again. That wealth rightfully belongs to you. If it's yours, you should take it."
Even Joseph had said that taking the assets and donating them to charity was better than letting the greedy members of the Chase family have them.
With Melanie supporting her so fiercely, Vivica’s resolve hardened. The hesitation vanished. After a brief pause, she nodded, her expression lightening. "I understand. I know what I need to do now."
"Good. Now hurry up and go grab dinner. It's fine if you two starve, but don't let my precious Chaim go hungry!" Melanie teased.
Vivica laughed, promising to feed him soon, and ended the video call.
Throughout the entire conversation, even though the call was on Joseph’s phone, Sheridan and Melanie hadn't even thought to say a word to their own son. They only had eyes for their grandson and beloved daughter-in-law.
Vivica handed the phone back. Joseph offered a self-deprecating smirk. "I'm the biological son, yet I'm treated like a glorified prop. I don't even warrant a 'hello'."
Chaim looked up, his big eyes blinking. "Daddy, what's a prop?"
Joseph was speechless.
Stifling a laugh, Vivica ruffled her son’s hair and looked affectionately at her husband. "It's because you're their own flesh and blood. They don't need to stand on ceremony with you."
