Vivica remembered now; he had said that.
"From what we've seen so far, their remorse is genuine, and so is their desire to make it up to you. You haven't lost anything by taking one step back."
Vivica smiled, a hint of playful complaint in her tone. "No matter what I do, you always find a way to justify it, to ease my doubts and indecision. How come I never noticed before what a smooth-talker you are?"
A touch of pride crossed Joseph's handsome face. "I don't smooth-talk anyone. I only speak the truth."
"Ha!" Vivica didn't believe him for a second. If this wasn't sweet-talking, what was? And he wouldn't even admit it.
Back in the car, Joseph started driving toward a scenic spot they had planned to visit. Along the way, Vivica received a call from Quintina Christie.
"Hello, Quintina."
"Vivica, are you back in Riverdale yet?" Quintina asked.
Quintina had been stuck at the hospital over the New Year holiday, working herself to the bone. Now that she finally had a day off, she wanted to meet up with her best friend and give Chaim his New Year's gift.
Vivica's tone dropped slightly. "No, we're still in Sydville. We'll probably head back just before work starts again."
"Staying that long? Sounds like things are going smoothly then. Have you officially reconciled with them?"
After all, if the meeting had been unpleasant or awkward, they would have come back much sooner.
"We haven't officially reconciled, but they're in trouble. I thought since we're already here, I should help them out."
Vivica hadn't told her friend about any of this. It wasn't that she didn't trust her, but she felt she was being too soft-hearted and spineless. She was afraid that with Quintina's fiery personality, she'd just get angry and lecture her.
