Vivica recognized them too. Her face grew serious, and she immediately went on guard, linking her arm with Joseph's. "Ignore them. Let's go inside."
Joseph glanced back at her reassuringly before turning to the two men. "Mr. Sullivan Chase isn't planning on silencing me for good, is he?"
He said it deliberately. Since these men worked for the Chase brothers, they had to know what kind of people their bosses were. So there was no need for Joseph to beat around the bush.
The men's faces froze for a second before they broke into placating smiles. "Mr. Baird, you have quite a sense of humor. This is a lawful society. Besides, with your status, Mr. Chase has nothing but the utmost respect for you."
*These two are smooth talkers,* Vivica thought, a little surprised.
As they were talking, the bodyguards Raymond had assigned to protect Vivica and Chaim hurried over.
"Mr. Baird, you should take the child upstairs. We'll handle this."
The bodyguard's expression was grim. Before he even finished speaking, he turned to Sullivan's men and grabbed one by the collar. "Go back and tell your boss not to get any ideas about them."
It had to be said, the men Raymond had assigned were bold and looked competent. But Joseph wasn't afraid.
On the contrary, he wanted to meet with Sullivan alone and see what the man had to say. If he was lucky, he might even be able to pry some useful information out of him.
So, Joseph turned and handed Chaim to Vivica, instructing her in a low voice, "Take Chaim upstairs to the room. I'm going to meet your dear uncle."
"No." Vivica took the child but also grabbed her husband's arm, her face tense with worry. "Don't go. They'll do anything to protect themselves."
Joseph raised a hand to stroke her cheek, coaxing her gently. "Don't worry, they're not that stupid. Besides, I'll have our guys with me. Nothing will happen."
Sullivan wouldn't be audacious enough to try and silence all three of them at once.
Vivica was still frowning, unconvinced.
Joseph leaned in closer and whispered, "Trust me. I know what I'm doing."
