"Joseph, know when to back off! Don't get arrogant!" Sullivan raged. "Don't think that little bit of evidence you have can do anything to me. If you had anything concrete, you would have sent me to prison for good, not just for one night."
Sullivan was a sharp man, and he had seen through Joseph's strategy. But Joseph remained unflustered. He simply processed the words he heard and shot back, "Know when to back off? Why didn't you 'back off' with your own brother, or your own nephew? You ruined their lives, and now you're telling others to show mercy?"
Sullivan's lips trembled. He tried to stand again, his body shaking as he used the coffee table to haul himself to his feet. "Joseph!" he bellowed, pointing a trembling finger. "Don't you dare slander me! I can sue you for making such baseless accusations!"
Joseph just smiled without a word and turned to leave. As he stepped out of the lounge, he nearly collided with a frantic Raymond.
"How did it go?" Raymond asked anxiously. "What did Sullivan want? Did he threaten you?"
Joseph smiled calmly. "No, he offered me a chest of gold to buy my silence."
"A chest of gold?" Raymond was stunned, his eyes darting to Joseph's empty hands. Realizing Joseph would never accept it, Raymond scoffed. "He really underestimates you." With the Baird family's resources, they were long past the point of being swayed by money.
"Alright, you should head back. I'm going back to the hotel myself," Joseph said, quickening his pace, eager to return to his wife and son.
Raymond jogged to keep up. "This meeting has definitely provoked him. You need to be even more careful from now on. I'm assigning two more men to you."
Joseph didn't object and got into his car, which sped away.
Back at the hotel, Vivica was still awake, though Chaim was already asleep. Seeing her tall, handsome husband return, she rushed over and took his hands, looking him over from head to toe. "Are you okay? What did that old man want with you?"
