Vivica spoke with complete composure. Her words weren't born out of sympathy for them, but rather a desire to avoid owing any favors.
She knew that accepting even a small holiday envelope today might give Loretta the false impression that she was open to changing her mind, which would only lead to endless harassment. It was best to draw a firm line right now.
Loretta stared at the hand returning the cash envelope, her chest heaving. "What is that supposed to mean? You're rich now, so my little bit of cash isn't good enough for you?"
"Think whatever you want." Before Vivica could finish her thought, she saw her driver pulling up in the Maybach.
Stepping forward, she shoved the envelope directly into the slanted pocket of Loretta's coat, then took Chaim's hand and walked toward the car.
Loretta spun around. Seeing her walking away, she suddenly panicked and blurted out, "Wait! I need to talk to you!"
A faint smile touched Vivica's lips. She wasn't surprised in the least.
As expected, her former sister-in-law never visited without a hidden agenda.
Showing up out of nowhere was definitely about more than just a casual holiday gift.
"Chaim, get in the car first."
Vivica handed her son over to the driver, making sure he was settled in the backseat before turning back to face Loretta.
"What is it? Speak," Vivica said, her demeanor as cool and indifferent as ever.
Loretta pursed her lips, hesitating for a moment before answering. "Fletcher... he's out of options."
Vivica's expression remained calm. "What do you mean? He sold his company. He should be completely debt-free by now."
"Hardly." Loretta's face contorted with a mix of embarrassment and indignation.
It was humiliating to admit, but right now, she couldn't think of anyone else to turn to for help.
"He sold the business and paid off most of his debts. But then he took out another loan to start a new venture and got caught up in an investment scam. They took him for everything he had."
Astonished, Vivica stared at her in disbelief.
"Did he sell his brain along with the company? How could someone so shrewd fall for an investment scam?"
If he were a naive kid fresh out of college, or an elderly man losing his wits, it would make sense.
But he had run a successful business. He had seen how the world worked. How could he possibly be conned like that?
"The partner was a former client. Someone he knew. He let his guard down, and in the end..."
Frowning, Vivica shook her head repeatedly, at a loss for words.
"He's completely shattered," Loretta cried. "He spent the entire holiday holed up in his apartment, just lying in bed. He doesn't go out, he doesn't speak. I go over every day to check on him, to bring him food and water, but he acts like I'm not even there."
As Loretta sobbed out her story, it finally clicked for Vivica—no wonder she hadn't heard a peep from Fletcher over the holidays.
