Hillary insisted on seeing her out, so Cheryl pushed the wheelchair as they accompanied Vivica downstairs.
Only after Vivica's car drove off did the smile fade from Hillary's face, replaced by a long, wistful sigh.
Cheryl turned the wheelchair around to head back inside. "Why the sigh? Still thinking about what she said?"
Hillary shook her head, her tone melancholic. "Not exactly. I just think she's too soft-hearted. It reminds me of how I was when I was younger. But she's luckier than I ever was—she didn't end up with a toxic family of leeches."
Because of that, her soft-heartedness wouldn't become a fatal weakness.
Cheryl smiled, changing the subject. "Actually, I don't think she's exactly like you were. She seems soft-hearted, but she clearly has a bottom line. Otherwise, she'd still be entangled with that adoptive family of hers."
Hillary thought about it. "That's true."
"I had Raymond look into them. Her adoptive family is completely destitute now. The father got out of prison, but he has severe diabetes with all sorts of complications. They have no money for treatment, so it's only a matter of time for him."
When Hillary first learned about the hell Vivica had endured, her initial instinct was to call the police and have Zebulon and his family locked away for good. That was why she had asked Raymond to run a background check on them.
"Karma finally caught up with them. I suppose the world is fair after all," Hillary murmured.
"So, do you still want to call the cops?"
Hillary waved her hand dismissively. "Forget it. I don't have the energy for it. If we press charges, the police will have to keep dragging Vivica in for questioning. She's pregnant with twins right now and needs to be extra careful. Let's not disturb her peace while she's resting."
As much as she wanted justice, as much as she wanted to see the villains pay, nothing was more important right now than her daughter's health and her grandson's recovery. If dragging the Lynn family to court ended up causing Vivica undue stress, Hillary would never forgive herself.
"You're right. When you put it like that, there's really no point in stirring the pot. Their lives are miserable enough as it is. Getting involved with people like that just brings bad luck."
"Exactly..."
