"You—!" Bertha's face stiffened, her eyes instantly burning with outrage as she pointed a stubby finger. "Hillary, did you just play us?"
Hillary's expression remained perfectly neutral, her tone flat. "How did I play you? I have the desire to help, but sadly, I lack the means."
"You lack the means?! Everyone knows your daughter married Joseph Baird! His family is loaded! If you just scraped the leftovers from between your teeth, it would be enough to feed both of our families! You just don't want to help!"
Bertha waved her plump hands around, pointing right at Hillary as she began to scream and hurl insults.
Her screeching immediately drew the attention of nearby guests, and people began to gather around to watch the spectacle.
Standing beside Hillary, Vivica saw just how utterly shameless these people were and couldn't hold back anymore.
"We just don't want to help, and what are you going to do about it? My parents suffered their entire lives, enduring endless torment, and it was all because of you! Even though your husbands committed those vicious acts, there is no way you two wives didn't know about it. You were accomplices! The fact that you weren't thrown in jail with them is already a mercy. How dare you drag your entire family to my father's funeral to play the victim and try to guilt-trip my mother!"
Joseph rarely saw his wife this furious. He immediately stepped to her side, gently rubbing her back. "Alright, don't get too worked up. Your health is the priority."
Vivica snapped, "I just can't stand looking at them! How can people be this shameless?"
The surrounding guests couldn't stomach it either. They pointed at the Chase family, whispering and loudly criticizing them.
"It's true. I heard a long time ago that Mr. Chase was framed by his own family. Their whole goal was to steal the inheritance and hijack his company!"
"Exactly! I heard Sullivan and Sean Chase got locked up not just for breaking the law with their shady business practices over the years, but because they hired a hitman to kill their own brother, which ended up killing his nephew! That's a murder charge!"
"After all these years, justice finally caught up with them. I can't believe they have the nerve to come here and beg for sympathy."
As the guests gossiped, they naturally sided with Hillary.
"Have some shame! Don't you know how to respect the dead? Coming to Mr. Chase's funeral to cause a scene—aren't you afraid of karma? Watch out, or his spirit might drag you all down with him tonight!"
"What nonsense are you spewing?! Mind your own business!" Bertha shrieked, instantly lashing out at the guests in a fit of humiliation and rage.
But the guests vastly outnumbered them.
"We're just stepping up for what's right! Everyone here has seen exactly what kind of outstanding people Mr. Chase and Hillary are over all these years!"
"You stole his business and haven't accomplished a single thing with it! You bled money every year! If the parent company hadn't kept bailing you out for the sake of the brand name, you would have gone bankrupt and been living on the streets years ago!"
"You vicious, shameless parasites! How dare you point fingers at Hillary? You deserve to sleep on the pavement and dig through the trash like the rats you are!"
"Exactly! You're worse than animals!"
