Suddenly, a thought struck him. Dropping his voice, he asked, "Did something actually happen between you and Dr. Holt?"
Franco shot him an icy glare. "Nothing happened."
"And it wasn't even a fake marriage. We just took a fake ID photo together."
But what he hadn't anticipated was that the photo was left behind in that island cabin, and Petty had seen it.
Galen sucked in a breath. "Are you really getting technical with me right now?"
With that, Galen sat back down on the edge of the bed. Dropping his teasing tone, he turned serious. "Speaking of which, you never told me why you faked it with Petty."
It made no sense. Franco valued Petty more than his own life. Even if he had hired someone to wipe her memories back then, considering how ruthless he could be, he should have locked her down completely the moment she offered to marry him. Why go out of his way to forge a fake marriage certificate?
"You saw what happened that day." Franco lowered his eyes. His gaze resembled a bottomless lake, faint ripples disturbing the surface. "You saw how devastated she was when she remembered."
He pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling a long, weary breath before murmuring, "What else could I do?"
Recalling the sheer tragedy of that day, Galen couldn't tell if Franco was talking to him or trying to convince himself.
In his distraction, his arm caught the edge of the files Franco had left on the mattress.
Papers cascaded to the floor in a messy pile.
Not knowing how to respond to Franco's rare vulnerability, Galen simply bent down to gather them. The weather had been warming up, so he was only wearing a dress shirt. As he reached out, his cuff rode up, revealing a thick wrap of medical gauze.
Franco cast a casual glance at it.
Once Galen stacked the files back on the bed, he finally asked, "How did you get hurt?"
Galen followed his line of sight. He nonchalantly adjusted his cuff, a smirk tugging at his lips. "Pretty wild, right? Livia did it."
He wore a cocky smile, but a flash of cold-blooded cruelty flickered in his eyes.
