“Kenneth.”
His assistant swallowed and sounded uneasy, voice barely steady. “There were too many people last night, things got messy. I had to grab the car, so I asked someone else to keep an eye on you. I didn’t expect…”
A misunderstanding like this.
“Kenneth, I’m really sorry.”
The assistant frowned, hardly breathing. “Maybe you could come by the office? Adela’s here, too.”
Adela.
That was the girl everybody was gossiping about with Kenneth lately.
Kenneth was furious. He didn’t bother answering, just hung up right away.
This wasn’t the first time, either. Every couple of months there was some rumor about him dating, every six months it was marriage. He should’ve gotten used to it by now. But today, for some reason, it really got under his skin.
He glanced at his social media, scrolling through the notifications. Only one message popped up—from Samantha:
[Is the stuff online true?]
Kenneth saw it but ignored it for a while. He changed clothes, got in the car, then finally sent back a casual reply: [What, is your son blind?]
[Samantha: Oh.]
“Is Emily alright?”
“She’s fine,” Pam said, trying too hard to sound cheerful. “Yesterday was exhausting. She’s just resting at home.”
“Okay.” Kenneth raked his fingers through his hair. He finally let out a slow breath. “As long as she’s okay. Remind her, she still owes me for that favor.”
“Will do.”
Pam ended the call with a laugh, but as soon as she hung up, her smile faded. She felt a stab of sympathy for Emily—her crush was all over the headlines with another woman. Alone at home, trying to heal, and still getting reminders not to forget about taking Kenneth out for dinner.
But as Pam scrolled through the endless news online, her gut told her it all traced back to Adela. It always did.
