The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1531

“You really don’t have to…” Emily leaned heavily against Kenneth, breathing in his scent. It sent a strange flutter through her chest and left her unsettled.

Weren’t they supposed to be engaged? Then why did being near him make her feel so uneasy?

“If you don’t want me to hold you, then Anthony can do it.” Kenneth didn’t take his eyes off her as he spoke, offering up the choice like he was being thoughtful. “Emily, do you want me, or Anthony?”

The mention of Anthony made Emily’s neck go stiff. She glanced his way but quickly looked down, feeling a jolt of panic.

No way. She didn’t have the guts for that.

Her head was spinning. She steadied herself by gripping Kenneth’s arm with both hands. “Thank you,” she managed, her voice barely a whisper.

“Emily, don’t say that.” Kenneth gently lifted her, clearly pleased with himself. His gaze was deep, his words soft and tender. “I’m your fiancé. Taking care of you is what I’m supposed to do.”

Being scooped up so suddenly made Emily gasp. She clung to his shirt, her pretty face scrunched up in surprise. “Why do you keep saying that?” she asked, her voice shaky.

Since she’d woken up, the word she’d heard more than any other was fiancé. Open her eyes, and there it was. Close them, and it was still there. It was as if the word had taken over her whole mind.

“I can put it another way.” Kenneth carried her to the car and set her gently on the soft seat. He draped a thin blanket over her shoulders, a small smile appearing on his lips. “You’re my fiancée. It’s only right for me to look after you.”

Caught in his arms, Emily could practically feel the warmth of his breath. Her body was rigid; even breathing felt dangerous.
