“What are you thinking?” Norma tried to steady her breathing, still not sure if she’d heard him right.
“I want to marry Emily.” Kenneth’s chin lifted, his posture as straight and respectful as a soldier’s. His eyes were dark, steady, unwavering as he looked at Norma. “I can’t prove it to you right now, but no matter what happens, I’ll always love Emily. Everything I have, it’s all for her.” His voice was clear and certain. “I’m going to announce my retirement from the entertainment industry to take care of her.”
Norma just stood there, frozen. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Transfer all his assets to Emily? Walk away from a brilliant career just to look after her?
“Kenneth, I have to remind you again. Emily will be paralyzed. She could die at any time, you—”
“I know.” Kenneth cut her off gently. His voice was firmer than ever. “I love Emily. Whether she’s healthy or not, she’s the only one I want.”
What kind of man would go this far for someone?
Was she really wrong about him? Was Kenneth not with Emily just out of gratitude?
Norma felt herself go numb. Inside, a storm churned.
Upstairs, Emily’s eyes welled up at Kenneth’s words. By the time she realized it, her face was covered in tears.
“Norma...” Kenneth stepped forward, dropping to his knees so quickly it took her by surprise. He knelt straight and tall, voice low and sincere. “I love Emily, truly. I can’t lose her. Even if she doesn’t have much time left, please… let me stay with her. I know she wants to be with me.”
Charlotte, watching nearby, felt a lump rise in her throat. She glanced at Anthony and whispered, “Doesn’t this feel familiar?”
Anthony smiled and kissed the corner of her mouth. His voice was soft and fond. “I knelt the same way, begging your grandpa to let me marry you.”
