“I told you, you bought way too much. There’s no way I can finish all this.”
Andrew’s face dropped the second she said it. He let out an annoyed little snort. “Just take it as a random act of kindness. Eat it or toss it, I don’t care.”
“Fine, I’ll eat it, I’ll eat it.” Shirley’s voice was playful as she hugged the snacks tighter. Her smile only grew, sweet and genuine. “Thanks.”
“Well, look at you. Suddenly so polite.” Andrew shoved his hands in his pockets, watching her real smile. That cheered him up instantly. “To be honest, you’re already not much to look at. If you starve yourself any skinnier, you’ll look even worse.”
Shirley’s smile faltered, gratitude fading just like that.
They bickered back and forth for a few minutes, each trading little quips.
Andrew finally felt satisfied with their banter. He remembered Shirley had a ton to study for, and he didn’t want to distract her too long.
After just a bit more small talk, he turned and left.
Shirley stood where he left her, watching him walk away until his figure disappeared. Her smile slipped away.
Was it just her imagination?
Why did it suddenly feel like Andrew was looking at her in a totally different way?
Did he… did he actually like her?
Thinking of the gap between their worlds, Shirley’s heart felt heavy. Their family backgrounds said it all. People like them—her and Andrew—just didn’t belong together.
Honestly, she was already so lucky to have even met someone like him, let alone Charlotte.
Tightening her hold on the snacks, she looked up at the harsh sunlight, blinking back the sadness pressing down inside.
You have to know when to be grateful, she reminded herself. Don’t wish for things you can never have.

Their whole conversation was caught by Karan, who happened to be walking past.
She spotted the boy from afar and frowned. Something about him seemed familiar.
Without thinking, she pulled out her phone, snapped a picture of his back, and sent it off to Pandora on social media.
Pandora replied almost right away:
Karan, how did you get a photo of Andrew? Is he at The Cabinda University?
So it really was him. Andrew. Pandora’s favorite topic these days.
