The early morning stillness at Imperial Heights was shattered by a loud, piercing ring. In the soft tangle of sheets, Charlotte stirred, grumbling as she woke, confusion clouding her face. Still half-asleep, she buried herself deeper against the warmth beside her.
Anthony noticed her reaction and couldn’t help but smile. He rubbed her back gently with one hand and reached for the phone on the nightstand with the other. Seeing who was calling, he leaned in close, his voice soft at her ear. “It’s Apex calling.”
He hadn’t planned on letting anyone interrupt their morning, but this was her personal line. Not just anyone had that number.
“Do you want to take it?” Anthony kissed her forehead, his words quiet.
“Ugh, so annoying,” Charlotte muttered, her face scrunched with irritation.
“I’ll hold it, you talk,” Anthony said, smiling as he answered the call and put it on speaker.
“Dr. Cole, hello?” came a nervous voice the moment the call connected. “This is Moran from Apex University’s physics department. I had some things I wanted to discuss with you. I hope I’m not disturbing you.”
Charlotte kept her eyes closed and didn’t move, her head still against Anthony’s chest. “It’s six a.m. here in Eldoria,” she said, her tone flat.
There was immediate silence on the other end. Moran audibly hesitated, clearly realizing his mistake.
Great job, he thought to himself. He’d totally forgotten about the time difference. Had he just woken up the famous Dr. Cole?
“Maybe you should go back to sleep…” Moran’s nerves came through even over the phone. He stuttered, trying to soften the awkwardness.
