“Otherwise, you won’t last a day at Cabinda University,” Pandora snapped, her voice icy cold. “Don’t believe me? Go ahead. See for yourself.”

“Is that a threat?” Shirley shot back, lips curling into a smirk. Maybe she’d seen too much, hanging around Charlotte all this time, but honestly, Pandora just sounded ridiculous.

“Try me. I dare you.”

She yanked her arm free from Pandora’s grip. Pandora, teetering in her heels, stumbled and landed hard on the ground, looking absolutely mortified.

“Shirley!” Pandora shrieked.

Shirley calmly dusted off her sleeve where Pandora had touched her. She leaned forward just a little, her smile dazzling but her eyes perfectly steady.

“I’ll be waiting. Let’s see if you actually have what it takes to get me thrown out of Cabinda.”

“Just you wait,” Pandora spat, but Shirley was already walking away. Pandora’s hands clenched tight at her sides, anger burning in her eyes.

After all, her grandfather was one of the university’s oldest board members. How hard could it be to get a random, broke student expelled? If the whole mess with Karan hadn’t gotten so public, making it impossible for her grandfather to step in, Shirley would never have dared to talk back to her like this.

Shirley stood by the bus stop when her phone rang. Andrew was calling. He wanted to see her.

“My grandma’s not feeling well,” Shirley told him. Her mood was already pretty low, but Andrew’s worried voice just made it worse. “I need to go take care of her. Maybe some other time.”

“Your grandma’s sick?” Andrew sounded instantly concerned. “Is it serious? I can go with you, just to make sure she’s okay.”

“It’s nothing new. She gets this sometimes, really, it’s not a big deal,” Shirley said, a little too quickly. The lie left her feeling pale and nervous. “I have to go. My phone’s about to die.”
