Anthony could see how anxious she was. He frowned a little and hurried to follow her, matching her pace under the umbrella. He didn’t try to stop her. Instead, his voice was gentle as he said, “If there’s a fight, just try not to go too hard. I don't want you getting hurt.”

Charlotte lifted her chin, eyes as cold as ice as she glanced at Anthony’s handsome profile. Her voice came out rough. “What if I want to kill someone?”

Anthony smiled slightly. “Getting rid of scum is good for the world. Nothing wrong with that.” He slipped his hand to her lower back, offering both comfort and confidence. “Don’t worry. I’m right here with you.”

That warmed Charlotte’s heart. He made sense. All those little worries about being a bad role model for their child just disappeared.

Charlotte quickly glanced at the phone, feeling her eyelid twitch. Her tone was icy. “Round up everyone. Search every vacant space and basement nearby. Fast.”

“Yes, Charlotte.” Hans didn’t dare waste a second. He rushed to make the calls.

The slum was under demolition and repairs, with more than a dozen empty lots and dark basements scattered everywhere. Piles of building materials and weeds made searching a nightmare.

Orders given, Charlotte looked around and kept her voice low. “We’ll cover more ground if we split up.”

Andrew’s people had already disappeared ahead.

“Got it.” Anthony handed Charlotte the umbrella, shrugged off his suit jacket and tossed it to the side. He rolled up his sleeves and charged out into the pounding rain.

Soon Hans’s guys joined in, spreading out and expanding the search.

Deep in one of those dim basements, Shirley’s hands were pinned roughly to the wall by a strange man.
