"The wedding is tomorrow," Nora said quietly, her voice warm and soft as she tried not to let her worries show. "Take it easy with them, okay?"

She was talking about the two little ones Charlotte was carrying. A lot of people were watching her closely, ever since she’d taken that leap from the upstairs landing last night. Nora’s heart had barely survived the fright.

"I know," Charlotte replied with a little smile. She licked her lips, grabbed her phone, and right on cue, saw a message from Anthony.

[I’ll come pick you up at nine tomorrow.]

One more day. She could handle that.

"Get some rest. Shirley and Stella will be here soon to keep you company." Nora brushed her daughter’s hair, gentle and reassuring.

Pretty soon, two girls showed up at the Gates house, grinning with excitement. There were maids busily running around and Charlotte lounged on the sofa, scrolling on her phone. The girls shot each other a look and whispered, "Isn’t she the bride? How is she so chill right now?"

"Aren’t brides supposed to be a nervous wreck the night before?" whispered one.

Stella just grinned. "Honestly, I don’t think anything in this world could make Charlotte look nervous."

She walked over to Charlotte, holding up a pretty cake box. "I picked this up on the way. It’s so fresh, you have to try it."

"Thanks, Stella." Charlotte sat up, gave Stella’s cheek a playful pinch, then handed her phone to Shirley so she could keep playing the game. Taking a fork, Charlotte took her time with the cake.

Stella blushed, settling her hands neatly on her knees, her eyes wandering curiously around the room. Nearby, two maids struggled to maneuver a big potted plant indoors. She spotted the lilies right away, a classic symbol for everlasting happiness. It was obvious—the Gates family was sparing no effort for Charlotte’s wedding.

Suddenly, one maid’s foot slipped. She lost her balance and the heavy pot wobbled in her hands, about to crash down toward her.
