This was it?
What did she mean, this was it?
Roger was speechless, staring at Stella in utter shock. He tried to maintain his composure, his tone as gentle as always. "Are you just tired?"
"If you're tired, get some rest. I'll handle everything else."
He coaxed her carefully, terrified of shattering the fragile girl in front of him.
"Roger, we really aren't right for each other."
Stella's chest ached. Fighting the nausea rising in her stomach, she tried to steady her breathing. "Thank you for taking care of me lately."
"I'll have someone return the gifts Samantha gave me tomorrow."
"There are some cookies I baked for you on the table downstairs."
"It's getting late. Go back and get some rest."
A heavy silence settled between them.
The door wasn't fully closed. From the hallway, Charlotte heard every word of their conversation.
Just as she feared.
The world Stella had finally opened up was shutting down once again.
Silence lingered in the room.
Roger didn't move. His gaze turned a somber, predatory red. It felt as if his very spine had been shattered, leaving him utterly defeated as he crouched before her.
"Be careful on your way back."
The churning in her stomach grew stronger. Stella gripped her clothes, afraid of showing any weakness, and stood up to leave.
But she didn't make it far before the overwhelming wave of sickness hit her.
Covering her mouth, she stumbled into the bathroom and collapsed by the toilet, gagging uncontrollably.
The dark memories she had suppressed for years came flooding back.
Like a suffocating wave of despair, they chipped away at her sanity, constantly reminding her of the humiliation she had endured.
She wasn't good enough for Roger.
She would only drag the Gates family down.
Why did it have to be her? What did she do wrong?
She gagged again.
The thought of that monster's face and his sinister smile only made the nausea worse.
"Stella."
