Charlotte stepped out of the research institute with her bag in hand, her eyes lowered and her face drained of color. The air around her felt heavy, thick with disappointment. The experiment had failed again, just as she expected.

“If this formula were easy, people wouldn’t have fought so hard for it all those years ago.” Dr. David walked her to the door, his voice gentle as he tried to lift her spirits. “Don’t worry. With our team, it’s only a matter of time. And hey, didn’t Solenia have some news about Covid-X?”

“Yeah.” Charlotte turned her helmet in her hands, barely glancing up. “I’ll be at the institute a lot in the next few days. Don’t let Anthony find out.”

Dr. David nodded, understanding without needing her to explain. Anthony always worried about her, especially since she kept pushing herself and ignoring her health. They still hadn’t found the cause of her genetic mutation. Any illness could knock her down if she overdid it.

“Be careful on your way home.” Dr. David hesitated, then remembered something from the group chat. “By the way, I heard the people from Solenia tracked you to Cabinda.”

“Really?” Charlotte finally looked up. There was a flash of annoyance in her eyes, then she let out a dry laugh. “Not bad. They know what they’re doing.” She couldn’t help but be a little impressed. Solenia always lived up to its reputation.

“Alright.” Charlotte put on her helmet and swung her leg over her motorcycle. Just before she left, she called back, “When you have a chance, send me Franco’s wife’s medical records.”

“You’re going to treat her?” Dr. David’s surprise quickly turned to concern. “Charlotte, if anyone finds out you’re Asclepius, you’ll be in serious trouble.”

Franco’s wife had a complicated background and nobody knew what Franco might do to keep things quiet.

“I know what I’m doing.”

Charlotte started her bike and took off down the empty street.
