Rhys swallowed hard, his throat tight.
He focused on the warmth beneath his palm, on the firm grip Felix had on his finger, and finally looked at the four friends standing around him.
Not long ago, he had been entirely alone.
Clara had brought these people into his life, giving him friends he could genuinely rely on.
Everything in this world that he cherished traced back to one person.
After a long moment, he let out a hoarse laugh.
"Clara. Let's go to the hospital."
He was done waiting.
He wanted to see if their second baby would look exactly like how Simon had described Felix at birth—a wrinkled, wailing little mess so ugly even his own mother would cringe.
He wanted to go to Felix's parent-teacher conferences, watch his son grow into a man, and share a drink with him on his eighteenth birthday.
He wanted to be there when Clara turned forty, so he could still go to the florist and pick out a bouquet of lisianthus for her.
There were too many things he still wanted to do.
Even if he had to battle rejection symptoms for the rest of his life, as long as it meant he could keep breathing the same air as his family, it was worth it.
Simon and Alex moved at the exact same time, rapidly tearing down the tents they had just set up.
Daniel strode over to the driver's side, pulled the door open, and glanced back at Rhys. He didn't say a word, just offered a single, resolute nod.
Felix never let go of Rhys's finger.
He looked up, his bright, dark eyes reflecting his father's face.
"Dad, so are you going to get fixed today?"
"Yeah. Once I'm fixed, I'll give your SWAT truck back."
"You promise?"
"I promise."
Felix pursed his lips. "You still owe me an inspection test, and I just figured out what it is."
Rhys gave a soft laugh. "Let's hear it."
"You have to come back. Otherwise, I'm only four—I'll forget you. And my little sister won't even know you."
Rhys's smile vanished.
He pulled Felix into a tight embrace, the two of them remaining completely silent.
It wasn't until Simon walked over, crouched down, and gently patted Felix's back that the moment broke. "Come on, buddy. Go get in the car with Simon. Give your dad a minute to get ready."
