But he couldn't bring himself to say those words to Leilani.
Silence filled the car again. It wasn't until they pulled up to the entrance of the nursing home that Milford finally spoke in a low voice. "Leilani, about Tamara and me... it's not what you think."
Leilani pushed the door open, not even bothering to look back. "Mr. Sherwood, your personal life has nothing to do with me."
Watching her walk toward the facility, Milford slammed his fist against the steering wheel, the horn letting out a harsh, piercing blast. He hated this feeling of powerlessness!
When Yvonne saw Leilani, her eyes instantly lit up. A surprised smile broke across her pale face. "Leilani! You came!"
However, Yvonne was sharp. She immediately noticed the state of Leilani's clothes and asked nervously, "Leilani, what happened to your outfit? Did something happen?"
Leilani paused, glancing down at her attire. She hadn't expected Yvonne to be so observant. She had tidied up at the hospital after getting her wounds treated. Aside from a few scuffs and tears in the fabric, you wouldn't know she'd been in a car accident unless you looked closely.
It was only after Yvonne mentioned it that Milford noticed something was off, too. Yvonne was right. Leilani looked more exhausted and disheveled than usual today. There were distinct scrape marks on the fabric around her knees and elbows.
"Just a little accident. I'm fine," Leilani said, brushing it off. She didn't want to get into details with the Sherwood siblings.
She walked over and gently held Yvonne's hand, her tone softening. "I haven't been to see you in a while. How are you feeling lately?"
Yvonne accepted the explanation, assuming it was just a minor mishap on the way there. Hearing Leilani's concern, her eyes crinkled with a smile.
"Much better! The doctor said with a bit more physical therapy, I'll be walking normally again." She paused, then added with a hint of regret, "It's just... last time you promised to visit, you never showed up. I thought you forgot about me."
