The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 541

Clive had just finished his shower. A bath towel hung loosely around his waist, catching the droplets of water that traced the sharp lines of his abs. He picked up his buzzing phone from the table and glanced at the caller ID. It was Luke.

With a sneer, he answered the call, his tone completely indifferent. "Hello?"

On the other end of the line, his former agent sounded casually accustomed to the interaction, offering natural pleasantries as if their past confrontations and bitterness had simply vanished. "Clive! You're not asleep yet, are you?"

Clive strolled over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring down at the sprawling city nightscape, his voice laced with disdain. "Did you really call me in the middle of the night just to ask if I was asleep?"

He remembered it all too well. When his scandal first broke, Luke couldn't wait to push him over the edge. Now that he had taken the fall and his penalty fees were being steadily wired to the company's account, he couldn't fathom what else Luke wanted to discuss.

Luke offered a dry laugh. Truth be told, he wasn't exactly thrilled to be calling Clive either. They had parted on horrible terms, and Clive had always been fiercely unforgiving. Even before dialing, he anticipated this conversation would be an uphill battle, and his prediction was proving entirely accurate.

Clive's personality was so stubborn that even if he fell into a pit a hundred times, he would never learn to quit while he was ahead or read the room. Knowing this, Luke decided there was no point in humbling himself.

"Since you're putting it that way, I'll skip the small talk," Luke said briskly. "I called to discuss renewing your contract with our agency. The boss made it clear—since you're with Winifred now, we're willing to let the past slide. You won't even have to pay the rest of your penalty fees, as long as you sign with us again."

Clive scoffed. He had seen the agency's true colors long ago. Back when he was in trouble, not only did they refuse to help, but they actually kicked him while he was down. His current ruined reputation was practically their doing. They had never intended to leave him an out.

Now that he had turned things around, they suddenly wanted him back? Did they really think it would be that easy?
