【Order has been successfully delivered and signed for.】
A small smile touched Callahan's lips before they pressed into a firm line again. Had Leilani accepted the food he ordered? Would she guess it was from him? Why hadn't she sent him a message? Was she still angry with him?
Callahan stared resentfully at his phone. It remained silent, with no new notifications. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and turned back to his desk. The files were spread open, but his gaze kept drifting back to his phone.
Callahan had ordered far too much food for Leilani to eat by herself. Not wanting it to go to waste, she decided to pack up the untouched containers and give them to the remaining patients to take home.
At first, the regulars were hesitant to accept. "It's fine, please take it. Think of it as doing me a favor," Leilani insisted. "Look at all this food. I can't possibly eat it all myself. It would be a shame to waste it. Besides," she added, "the quality from these places is guaranteed. You can just heat it up at home and enjoy."
Callahan had ordered from well-known private kitchens, so she felt confident in letting them take it. The patients weren't the type to argue, so they graciously accepted. "Thank you, Dr. Sloan."
After the last patient left, the clinic finally fell silent. Leilani’s gaze drifted back to her phone. The screen was dark, showing no new messages. What on earth was Callahan trying to accomplish with this stunt? Sending a mountain of food without a single word. Was it a peace offering or a power move?
She gently stroked the edge of her phone, hesitating for a moment before leaving it untouched. Outside, the last rays of the setting sun streamed through the window, stretching her shadow long across the floor. Leilani looked down at the untouched drink on her desk, and the frustration that had been building inside her for days began to fade.
That evening, she remembered Yvonne at home and made sure to save a portion of the delivery for her. When Leilani walked in carrying the food container, Yvonne was curled up on the sofa watching a reality show. She looked up at the sound.
