Callahan pinched her nose. “If I told you, it wouldn’t have been a surprise, would it?”
Leilani huffed, a little annoyed. “You didn’t have to tell me directly, but you could have hinted at it. We had a huge misunderstanding because of it. And… when you explained a few days ago, you didn't say it was a proposal. You said you were preparing a ‘birthday surprise.’”
He had lied to her twice, without even blinking.
Callahan looked completely innocent. “I wasn’t wrong.” He leaned in, whispering in her ear, “I never lied to you. I said I was meeting with a surprise planner. Isn’t a proposal a kind of ‘surprise’?”
His warm breath tickled her ear, and Leilani’s face flushed as she pushed him away. “Are you playing word games with me, Callahan?”
Callahan flashed a roguish grin and took her hand. “It’s called the art of language.”
Leilani glared at him but couldn’t help but smile too. “Do you have any idea? I almost thought you…”
She trailed off, but Callahan understood what she meant. His smile faded, and he gently stroked her cheek with his thumb. “I’m sorry I made you sad.”
Leilani shook her head and leaned back into his embrace. “It’s fine. I’ll forgive you, seeing as you did a decent job today.”
Callahan chuckled, the vibration of his chest rumbling against her. “Just ‘decent’?”
Leilani looked up at him and said deliberately, “Mm, so-so.”
Callahan’s eyes narrowed. He suddenly grabbed her waist, leaning in closer. “Then it seems I’ll have to try a little harder.”
Leilani laughed and pushed against him. “Stop messing around…” Her words were cut off as his lips captured hers.
