Because Leilani was always so intensely composed and fiercely independent, the idea of her dropping those walls and acting softly toward him...
Callahan thought it would be incredibly endearing.
Given how relaxed she had been on this trip, he figured the idea wasn't entirely out of the realm of possibility.
But he kept his mouth shut for now.
Pushing too hard would ruin it.
Patience was key.
Knowing Leilani's personality, if he demanded she act sweet and affectionate on command right now, she would likely just roll her eyes at him, or assume he'd suffered a traumatic brain injury.
So, he buried the thought. His expression remained utterly unreadable as a slow, meaningful smirk curved his lips.
"I haven't decided yet. I'll keep it on reserve for now."
"Remember the terms. Anything I ask."
"Just make sure you don't go back on your word when the time comes, Dr. Sloan."
He deliberately dragged out the last sentence, infusing it with a teasing, mysterious edge.
Her curiosity piqued, Leilani raised an eyebrow. "What? Are you worried I'm going to flake on a bet?"
"A promise is a promise."
"I lost fair and square. I can handle it."
Callahan took a half-step closer. Reaching out, his fingertips lightly brushed against the shell of her ear, gently tucking a stray strand of hair that her earmuffs had pushed out of place. The gesture was incredibly natural and deeply intimate.
"That wasn't what I meant."
"I just think... the favor you owe me might not be something appropriate to ask for in a place like this."
The warm friction of his fingertips sent a sudden, tingling thrill down her neck. Leilani instinctively tilted her head, though she didn't pull away completely.
She shot him a highly suspicious look. She could tell there were layers to his words today, and there was definitely something hidden in that dark smile of his.
It felt like he was setting a trap.
But she didn't bother pressing the issue. She knew Callahan.
