Tamara’s tense expression visibly softened.
Catching the shift in her demeanor, a flicker of smug satisfaction danced in Fitch's eyes.
Seizing the opening, he expertly redirected the focus back to her, effortlessly wiping out her last remaining doubts.
"Tamara, listen to me. Your only job right now is to stay relaxed and focus on a healthy pregnancy. Let us men handle the corporate headaches. If you stress yourself out and jeopardize the baby, how could I ever face your parents? When your dad wakes up, he'll tear me apart for not taking better care of you."
His words were entirely reasonable, wrapping his manipulation in a thick layer of paternal concern.
Looking at his earnest face, the bulk of her suspicions vanished, replaced by lingering anxiety for her father’s health.
"So, is my dad..."
"I promise you, I have my people stationed there keeping an eye on everything. He's in the best hands. The second there's an update, I'll let you know. Stop letting your imagination run wild. Eat well, rest up. Once he's stable, I'll take you to see him myself, alright?"
She bit her lip. Though still worried, she couldn't reasonably press the issue any further. She nodded slowly.
"...Alright. Thank you, Mr. Sherwood."
"We're family. No need for formalities," Fitch smiled warmly, standing up. "I asked the kitchen to make a special prenatal broth for you. Let me go see if it's ready. Just sit and relax."
Watching his retreating figure head toward the kitchen, she placed a hand over her lower abdomen, her brows still slightly furrowed.
Fitch had been so completely absorbed in his performance that he didn't realize someone was standing just around the corner, listening to every single lie he spun.
Milford was baffled. Fitch had just pulled off the ultimate corporate coup. Why was he still playing nice? Why go through the exhausting effort of fabricating such an elaborate lie to keep Tamara pacified?
Terrified that his father was going to back out of their deal, Milford waited until nightfall. As soon as Tamara retired to her room, he went hunting for answers.
