Gavin glanced at Felicia, then over at Max, his tone teasing. “Wow, no manners at all. Ever heard of knocking?”
Max’s gaze was steady. “You don’t belong here.”
Gavin lounged back on the sofa, completely at ease. “What, can’t I say hi to Felicia for a second?”
“You should go,” Max said, his words sharp and final.
Gavin met his eye for a moment, then just shrugged. He stood up, turning to Felicia with a crooked smile. “Alright, Felicia, I’ll be downstairs. See you soon.”
Felicia gave him a quiet nod.
Once Gavin stepped out, silence settled between them.
Max lowered himself onto the couch where Gavin had been and pulled a small box from his pocket. He opened it, revealing a pair of rings, and picked one up. Reaching for Felicia’s hand, he caught her hesitance and held on gently but firmly.
“Just for tonight,” he murmured, sliding the ring onto her right hand.
Felicia watched the diamond slip over her finger, her heart skipping.
Max kept her hand in his, his lips curling in a soft smile. “Perfect fit.”
Felicia drew her hand back.
Max let her go easily, then took the other ring and slid it onto his own left hand. Glancing at Felicia, he said, “Anne’s almost ready. Let’s not keep her waiting.”
Felicia lowered her eyes. “You go first.”
“I’ll be right outside.”
Max got up and left, closing the door gently behind him.
The stylists came in, carefully removing the gown from the mannequin. With practiced hands, they helped Felicia into the dress, styled her hair and makeup, then added dazzling matching jewelry. In the mirror, she looked like royalty.
The door burst open.
“Of course,” Max promised, gentle and sure.
He turned to Felicia. “Let’s go. The guests are waiting.”
In the ballroom, a world-class orchestra played gentle, lilting music. The decorations made the whole place feel like a scene out of a fairy tale.
Max and Felicia stepped out, Anne’s small hands in theirs, and slowly walked down the grand staircase. Every head turned, conversation fading into awed silence.
The three of them together made a stunning picture—a good-looking man, a breathtaking woman, and their radiant little girl.
People began to whisper, finally realizing the truth. This was Anne’s mother.
The answer was clear.
Now that everyone could see for themselves the woman who stood beside Max, who had given him a child, their curiosity turned to awe. She was more beautiful than anyone had imagined. The sight of her was almost unreal.
