A faint, mocking smile touched Felicia’s lips. “Too bad. I can’t do that with you.”

“I know. But that’s okay. We can take our time.”

He pulled his hands back and sat down beside her, reaching for her hand again. His thumb traced idle patterns on the back of it.

He asked softly, “Are you going back to the Capital tomorrow?”

Felicia didn’t respond.

Silence descended upon the room again, so thick you could almost hear their breathing.

After a long while, Max glanced at the dining table. “The food’s cold. Would you like to go out and eat?”

Felicia pulled her hand away. “You should go.”

Max looked at his empty hand. He didn’t insist on staying. “Alright,” he said, looking at her. “Get some rest tonight. Don’t overthink things.”

With that, he stood, walked to the door, and left.

Downstairs, he ran into Jeremy, who was just entering the lobby. Jeremy saw him too.

Their eyes met for a brief second before Max looked away and walked past him without a word, exiting the hotel.

Jeremy paused for a moment before heading toward the elevators.

When he reached Felicia’s room, a staff member was just coming out, clearing away the dinner trays. He noted that the food had barely been touched.

He stood at the door and knocked gently.

When Felicia saw it was him, she quickly composed herself. “Jeremy. Hi.”
