Anne blinked her big eyes at Felicia. “Yes. Daddy said that you gave birth to me, but you had very important things to do, so you couldn’t be with me before.”
Anne hopped off her chair and threw her arms around Felicia’s waist, tilting her head back to look up at her mother. “But I’m not mad at you. You’re back now, and you have to stay with me forever. And I’ll stay with you forever, too.”
Felicia gently cupped the back of Anne’s head. Watching her sweet, innocent face, she was overcome with a tangle of emotions. She had never planned to tell Anne that she was her birth mother; she was content with Anne simply calling her ‘Mommy.’
But Max had gone and told her. She knew exactly why he’d done it, but she had no idea how to confront him about it.
Seeing her mother fall silent, Anne pouted. “Why aren’t you saying anything, Mommy?”
Felicia composed herself and forced a smile. “It’s nothing. Have you finished all your homework for today?”
But Anne seemed to sense she was changing the subject. “Mommy, we pinky-promised. You’ll stay with me forever, right?”
Anne was so perceptive, not the kind of child you could easily distract. Felicia relented. “Don’t worry, Anne. I will always be with you.”
Anne beamed with happiness.
That very night, someone picked Olisha up from the hotel and drove her to Oakridge Estate.
Two days later, Felicia and Savannah were attending a public speaking conference. Dannie was there as well. After the event, Dannie came over to greet them.
From her, Felicia learned a startling piece of news. Max had voluntarily given up the largest portion of his company’s investment share in Heathview.
This meant that in the end, BlueMarble Investments would only receive a small fraction of the profits.
